Smart Key vs Remote Fob: Which One Does Your Car Have?

Smart key, proximity key, remote fob explained in plain English — how to tell which one your car uses before ordering.

The words get used interchangeably and it costs people money. Here is the two-minute version.

Remote fob

A fob is a remote control: buttons for lock, unlock, trunk, panic. If it is built into the key head you still turn to start. Battery dies → buttons stop working, but the blade still starts the car. Replacement: remote fob service.

Smart / proximity key

A smart key is an identity badge: the car senses it nearby, unlocks on touch and starts via button — no turning, ever. Battery dies → car may not start at all. Replacement: smart key service.

How to tell in ten seconds

Look at the dash. A start/stop button instead of a keyhole means smart key. A keyhole (or a slot that swallows a blade) means transponder or fob. Infiniti owners can shortcut this: check your model page first.
