Lost Your Car Key? What to Do, In Order
Lost car key checklist: stay put, gather documents, decide between locksmith, dealer and tow — with real cost differences.
Losing a car key feels expensive before it actually is. Follow the order below and you will usually save both money and hours.
1. Stop and retrace — cheaply
Most "lost" keys are within fifty meters of where you are standing. Fifteen calm minutes of retracing beats a $300 replacement every time.
2. Gather your documents
Whoever replaces your key must verify ownership: registration or title plus photo ID. This also unlocks the fast path — cutting a new key from the VIN — without the car being towed.
3. Compare your three options
A mobile auto locksmith comes to the car and cuts on the spot. The dealer usually wants the car towed and charges more for the same key. A tow-truck-plus-dealer trip is the slowest and priciest of all three. For most drivers in Brooklyn, the locksmith is the answer.
4. Duplicate immediately after
When the new key works, order a spare in the same breath. See lockout prevention for where to keep it.
