Car Key Replacement by VIN: How It Works

Lost all keys? Replacement by VIN explained — documents you need, how the code lookup works, and why no tow is required.

Your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the car’s fingerprint — 17 characters visible through the windshield on the driver’s side. With it, a locksmith can look up the factory key code and cut a brand-new blade without ever seeing your old key.

Documents: non-negotiable

Proof that the car is yours: the registration or title in your name, plus photo ID. No legitimate locksmith cuts from a VIN without it — and that is a good thing for your car.

How the process runs

Verify ownership, look up the key code, cut the blade, program the chip or smart key, test. The car never needs to visit the dealer, and for most models we come to the car anywhere in Brooklyn.

One catch

VIN cuts work beautifully for the blade, but the electronics still need programming on the car. Anyone selling you a "VIN key by mail, no programming" is selling you a paperweight.
